The original Venice Canals were built in 1905 by real estate developer Abbot Kinney. These present-day canals were built adjacent a few years later by another developer and lined with modest cottages. Kinney's canals were filled in and turned into city streets in 1929, while this second set was survived, only to be neglected by the city of Los Angeles until a major renovation in 1992-93. These canals are now an expensive real estate district of restored old cottages and large modern homes, some of architectural distinction.
